Effect of shot peening on the surface properties, corrosion and wear performance of 17-4PH steel produced by DMLS additive manufacturing

Abstract Components produced by additive manufacturing (AM) via direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) have typical as-fabricated surface defects. As a result, properties of AM products should be modified to increase their strength, anti-wear behaviour, and at the same time ensure high corrosion resistance. Surface modification shot peening is considered suitable for medical devices made 17-4PH stainless steel. The objective this study was determine effect pressures (0.3 MPa 0.6 MPa) three types blasting media (CrNi steel shot, nutshell granules ceramic beads) on tribological characteristics resistance specimens DMLS Results demonstrated that caused microstructure refinement and—except shot-peened specimens—induced both martensite (α) formation retained austenite (γ) reduction. peened with shots showed highest in hardening approx. ~ 119% (from 247 542 HV), which significantly improved wear mechanical (hardness resistance) were obtained surfaces using following media: beads > CrNi granules.
